When my older girls were little I worked many hours and was away from them so much. This is something that I have had the luck not to go through with Sammy. Working at home has allowed me the opportunity to be around for my child a lot more than I was with her sisters. For that I am very thankful. But I do work a lot of hours and sometimes "being" with her means having her upstairs doing homework, or next to me in the living room watching tv, while I work. That is something that is hard on our relationship, because I can not pay 100% attention to her. Because I am so busy lunch or dinner will be something quick or maybe she will go with her dad while I catch up at home. It's hard but it is a fact of life and many moms go through the same thing. Sometimes you begin to doubt yourself and wonder if you're even a good mom at all. Because a good mom would set everything aside to be with their child. Right?
Wrong. Mothers are not super heroes, or magicians. It is impossible to stop working altogether to watch our kids. We need to work. Many mothers have to do what I did for years, leave the house in the early morning hours to come back once the kids have gone to bed. It's not because they want to, it is because they are making a living for their kids. As moms we do the best we can, and I guarantee you that if you ask your kids how you are doing as a mom, they will say you are doing a great job.
Today I asked Sammy if she thinks I am doing a good job at being a mom. Because she loves to draw she went to make me a picture. I think it's pretty safe to say Sam loves her mom even when she is a bit lacking.
I also asked her what she thinks I am great at:
helping with homework - even if I help her in between typing out posts
feeding her - even I am shocked at this one, mostly I provide snacks while her dad cooks
buying her Littlest Pet Shop toys - yeah, I AM a really good shopper
taking care of her - well, I do keep her alive
