I've had a lot of experiences with my girls, not all of them positive. Life brings with it struggles and plenty of painful moments, but it was an experience with one of my grand children that really put me to the test and made me have to be 2x stronger. When my granddaughter Darlene began to walk we noticed that she walked funny. She had a limp and as she got older that little limp became more and more noticeable. Now of course her mother asked about this particular problem every time she took her to the pediatrician. They would make her walk, watch her, and always tell her that it was normal. That a LOT OF KIDS walked like that, and that it was just a habit she would have to grow out of. Sometimes we worried so much that we made an appointment specifically to ask about her strange walk, and once ( I think they got tired of us complaining) they sent her to get x rays, but on her ankle. Which of course was perfectly fine, because even we could see that the problem was in her hip area not her foot.
One night Vanessa took Darlene to the hospital for a totally unrelated issue. It was there, that an angel of a nurse asked about the strange walk and when Vanessa explained the problem, he got an xray of her hip area. A few weeks later we got the letter in the mail from the hospital stating that she had a congenital hip displacement and needed to see a specialist right away. Immediately Vane set off to get her to a hospital that specialized in this area, she was checked and of course no one could believe we had not caught this before, because it was a real problem that SHOULD HAVE been addressed when she was much younger. But at least now we were there, she went to many appointments and had to have a hip replacement. After that she was in a cast for almost 5 months, and will forever have a problem with her hip and most likely have to have it replaced a few more times in her lifetime.
It is this type of experience that really tests you. Knowing she had such a serious problem, having to take her so far away to doctors and to get operated, all while school had just started and having other kids at home to tend to. The horror of waiting for her to get out of the operation and just find out if she had made it through okay. And let's not even talk about the recuperation that was hell for us, I can only imagine what it was for her.
